You don't exactly have to be flirting with Mensa to figure out the Washington Capitals are destined to be an NHL powerhouse within a few years. Why wait? Ah, what the hell, let's see how they match up against the big boys, say, right now. Arguably the most dominant player on the planet today, the gap-tooth, mop-topped Alex
Ovechkin, is locked up in D.C. for a least the next few U.S. presidential terms. Think about. When Ovechkin is up for his next contract, Jessica Alba will have already celebrated her 40th birthday. Yikes. Feeling a little older, are you? With budding stars Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom lending support to OV, teams will probably want to stay out of the Capitals' path in the next couple of years months. Obviously, they are thinking playoffs in Washington - as in this year. Judging by the manner in which the Capitals
steamrolled the Boston Bruins Read Full Post: Alex
Ovechkin looks to carry Caps all the way

Washington definitely has earned the status of "team nobody wants to play in the first round" this year. Yes, I know that they aren't technically in the playoffs right now, but do you really think that Carolina is going to hang on to their division lead, with two more games against the Caps (who also have a game in hand)? Me neither.
It is obvious that they want to win now, just based on the fact that they pulled all the right strings at the trade deadline. First off, Sergei Fedorov gets them veteran leadership from a proven winner, not to mention a pretty nice post-season mentor for Nicklas Backstrom. Also, Matt Cooke was a brilliant acquisition. His persona as a top-notch agitating pest should translate to a few more power plays down the stretch. Finally, Cristobal Huet has the potential to be THE major coup of the deadline. He has to feel about 1,000 pounds lighter, since he not only doesn't have Carey Price breathing down his neck, he also doesn't have to worry about the hometown fans expect him to turn into the second coming of Ken Dryden or Patrick Roy. These are Caps fans we're talking about here. All that is really needed to rock The Phone Booth this season is a playoff appearance. There is absolutely no pressure on him right now in comparison, so that should make him more relaxed and ultimately more confident.

I totally agree with this article. It may not be a popular opinion in the NHL or the Canadian "I heart Crosby" media that Ovechkin > Crosby, but I've always contended that if he were given better supporting players, he was at least equal or better than Crosby.
If anything, his personality puts him over the top.

I haven't changed my view on this one at all:
Alex
Ovechkin should be NHL's Posterboy

If anything, his personality puts him over the top. Definitely Ovechkin > Crosby, at least IMO. I agree with the original poster that they are on their way to being a powerhouse. I actually found out today that they could have as many as 6 draft picks in the first 4 rounds this year. So they will keep adding important pieces.

Crosby is a whiner and OV just enjoys the game. Give Ovechkin a Malkin and see his numbers go through the rook. Then again, OV doesn't need any help

OV is the man! He's a one man wrecking crew. Malkin is good, Crosby is good, OV is great.

Ovechkin is all sorts of fun to watch, as is the young Swede Nicklas Backstrom who has been feeding him the puck for a lot of his goals over the past month or two. Considering both players' ages, they're going to be a very scary duo for many, many years to come.
