If there is one thing that no longer blows in the Windy City, it's the Blackhawks.

Who knew?

Yes, kids, it's safe to wear that jersey you picked up from the half-price rack about a decade ago.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is your new NHL. Somewhere, Gary Bettman is smirking, peace and harmony among the former league weak sisters now realized.

Heading into play last night, the Bruins and Predators were inside the playoff cutline while Chicago, Phoenix, Buffalo and the Islanders were within four points in their respective conferences.

Chicago, Buffalo, Boston and the Islanders?

Hurry, someone help me. I'm stuck in 1983.

Times have changed in Chicago. No longer are they out of playoff contention by the first week of November. No, now they know how to win.

Or, as Blackhawks head coach Denis Savard puts it, Commit to the#$%!@  Indian.

So tonight more than 22,000 are expected to flock to the

What's happening in Chicago on the heels of Old Man Wirtz taking a perma-trip six feet under is what I had hoped would happen in Toronto when Old Man Ballard kicked the bucket. Never happened though.

Chicago, with Young Son Wirtz at the helm, is doing everything right - and the fans are the real winners. Their future looks bright...

Wirtz kicking the bucket was the best thing to ever happen to this team. Chicago was a running joke at least now there is some hopw there. I'd take Toews and Kane on my team any day.

the ChiHawks are looking a lot like the Caps and Pens. Plenty of great young talent and a promising future.
o matter how horrible you are, you still have to draft right. Ovechkin, Kane and Crosby were easy building blocks, but you still have to surround them with the right talent.

The sellout tonight may be a sign that the Hawks are set to turn the corner. You used to be embarrassed to say you were a Hawk fan and maybe they can become to talk of the town again. Seem to be on the right track now.

Good for the Blackhaws, and good for the NHL. Normally, I don't speak ill of the recently departed, but I heard that Dollar Bill died, I called up my buddy who's a huge Blackhawks fan, and congratulated him. Every step that this team takes forward should serve as a reminder to how much of a disease Wirtz was to this team, and ultimately the league.

The best thing that has happened to Chicago isn't even on the ice yet.

Rocky Wirtz must have his old man spinning in his grave as he rights all the wrongs old Dollar Bill made. First he removed Pulford who is as or more responsible for the mess the Hawks are in as he was the 'educated' voice that Bill Wirtz trusted.

Then Rocky approached Comcast to get Hawk Home games on TV. Then he hired a president, John McDonough a marketing genius with the Cubs, who would look after the business side of the team and effectively removed Wirtz from day to day hockey decisions (hear that MLSE?). Then Wirtz along with McDonough discussed with Dale Tallon what was needed in terms of budget to make the Hawks not only a contender but in the words of Wirtz, 'A Stanley cup Champion". Then McDonough and Wirtz reached out to the forgotten and banished alumni to rejoin the Blackhawk family.

Wirtz is doing everything right, now the people in the positions to make the Hawks a better team on the ice are on the spot. Next year I hope to see the hawks contend for a playoff spot. I hope that Tallon will make well thought out player moves, no more panic signings like Khabibulin. Sign character people and build a team not on stars players but on team needs. I hope to see the Blackhawks contending for a cup in 3 to 4 years.

The cynic in me is hoping for all this because frankly the Hawks have let me down before. I hope that with what Wirtz has put in place that my hopes will one day turn to expectations.
