The Edmonton Oilers: the dynasty that once was.

The National Hockey League has seen its share of dynasties over the years, and the Edmonton Oilers were one of the most dominant.

The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990. They combined offensive finesse with decent defense and superb goaltending to become a team that few could compete with.

In that dynasty period, the Oilers had a plethora of rising stars. Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, and, of course, Wayne Gretzky were considered among the league's elite and all eventually ended up in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

So what is the difference between Calgary and Edmonton? While Calgary has signed Iginla, Kiprusoff, Regehr and hopefully Phaneuf soon to long term deals, made significant signings in the free agent market (Aucoin, Sarich, Nolan, Cujo) all of whom where presumably courted by other teams and finally had some drafted talent make the roster (Boyd and Nystrom), Edmonton has not done much. Their goalies are cast-offs from other teams and on most nights the best Oiler on the ice. Free agents signings are limited to the players who had inflated opinions of their value on the market and just "ended up" in Edmonton after other options didn't pan out (Souray and Pitkanen) not to mention a player they were lucky not to get. (Nylander....can you say Petr Nedved wannabe?) Does this all boil down to Kevin Lowe is not as good a GM as Darryl Sutter? I say basically yes. The only team with a worse GM is possibly Toronto. The other option is that Edmonton is a bad city and most players wouldn't want to live there so be careful if you disagree with the Lowe verdict.
