Seeing how I have nothing better to do on a lazy Sunday evening, there are still seven more sleeps until the Super Bowl and my boss will likely call me in to a closed-door meeting Monday if I didn't watch the game, I thought I would take a few minutes to pass on my thoughts as I watch the NHL All-Star Game from Atlanta: 6:05: The Hives open up the show. The Hives? Ominous, no? Just who the hell are these guys anyway? Cute girls bouncing up and down in front of the stage - Thrashers cheerleaders, I reckon - but the camera would rather zoom in and out for close-ups on the singer and guitar player. Damnit. 6:12: Two things come to mind as the Eastern lineup is announced. John Paddock looks like he would rather be anywhere else and it seems Tomas Kaberle trimmed his unibrow for this one. Now i know the all star game isnt exactly intense but i disagree with you completly. If your just going to complain about how boring it is then just dont watch it. Personally i enjoyed it and i think Rick Nash should have taken MVP. And i think you need to focus more on hockey and less on the cheerleaders. I agree with you about the Hives... all i have to say about them is Who cares??

Hemsky I think he being a little sarcastic. The game itself is a joke and the cheerleaders were about the best part of the game. Maybe that explains why the NHL is thinking about canceling the game altogether.

The highlight of the game for me -
8:51 - The announcer introduces the three people that will be giving out the MVP award (eventually to the wrong guy). After introducing two guys I've never heard of the announcer introduces the man himself - Gary Bettman!
The crowd immediately erupts in boo's as the tyranical dictator of the NHL walks onto the ice. Bettman laughs it off and announces the guy with the hat trick did not win MVP.

Great blog! Nash should have won the MVP and Hemsky should have been in it just for the dangles. If Phaneuf had thrown just one hit, I would have nominated him for MVP.

In all fairness to hemsky, he does have a point. If you don't like it, don't watch. Sure. But that isn't what hockey is about, is it? It is a dog and pony show. I watch because I am a fan of the game, but is there anything constructive to gaining a new audience with this type of no-hitter? If you are looking to build new fans, why not do it with the way the game is played on a night in and night out basis? Lots of hitting and playmaking. Does the Pro Bowl for football lay off the hitting and make it a flag football game? Of course not. And if I didn't watch, I'd just be joining most people anyway, would I not?
That said, last night's game was more entertaining than most, at least in the third period. Still, it has to be improved and marketed in a different light. Put a berth in the Cup final on the line. Have North America play Europe again. Pit the two Cup finalists against the rest of the league. Anything to give it a little spice.

Horrible all star format. I think it is the best they can do seeing how no one needs to get injured, but it just seems so staged.
Tough to compare to the MLB all star game as there is no real contact in baseball, but the NHL needs to come up with something more creative.
