Apparently, there are a few teams that didn't get the memo. You know, the one that says if you have sucked for most of the year, chances are you do indeed suck. A fruitless, late-season ride does little to change that. So, why not just ride out the storm, string together a few more losses honest efforts, head to the draft, take a pick-of-the-litter draft choice and smile. OK, I won't go as far as to use the word "tank", per se, but there's no harm easing the foot off the gas pedal a tad. Use the backup, play the rookies, pull a star player out of the lineup and blame it on, uh, let's see, a tweaked groin. There is no reason to tank and in fact it is bending the rules. Take your lumps and draft right. Every team should be shooting for a playoff spot until they are mathetmatially eliminated and even after then you should be out to win every game. Tanking is for loser franchises.

Agreed. The Leafs should have tanked a month ago. Now they'll get stuck with a pick that may or may not have NHL potential down the road.
When will they ever learn?

Bending the rules is pretty common-place in the current NHL. Teams that are sucking late in the season often play more of their youth and backup goalies.

Exactly, if a team is a lost cause, why not pack it in? This season is a lost cause, so move on to next. Pretty common sense really.

Bending the rules is deliberately throwing games, a ala the 1919 Black Sox scandal. All I am suggesting is to play your rookies and backup goaltender a little more. After all, the rookies are your future, so why not see what they can do in a no-pressure scenario? It's a fine line, I know, but it is quite obvious more than a few teams are walking it.

I'd rather not have to worry about it. My Habs are contending for one of the top spots in the league and could go all the way to the Cup finals, again.
Draft-smaft. Isn't that what Fletcher once said last time in Toronto?
