In a move that caught most hockey observers off-guard simply because of the timing, the Toronto
Maple Leafs have fired head coach Paul Maurice. The Leafs, who are also in the hunt for a general manager to replace interim GM Cliff Fletcher, relieved Maurice of his duties this morning. Maurice had one year remaining on a three year deal, compiling a 76-66-22 record and missing the playoffs both years. He was promoted from the Toronto Marlies by then-GM John Ferguson, Jr. in 2006. Ferguson was fired in January. A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon. MY TAKE: Huh? Wasn't it said that the incoming GM would make the decision on Maurice? What exactly has occurred between the end of the season and now that changed their minds? As much as a longshot as it might seem, but could this... Read Full Post: Paul

I agree this makes little if any sense. Then again what does with the Leafs? Doug Armstrong is on the Fan right now and hasnt even been contacted yet so I doubt it is to announce a new GM. This has nothing to do with Brunnstrom, IMO.

Maurice could have pushed for this to happen sooner than later, which was pretty much inevitable with a new GM incoming. But whether he expected it or not, it's probably the best scenario for him in the long run with all the coaching vacancies around the NHL right now.

Yet another colossal miss-handling by the Leafs. It makes no sense, I want explanations.

Valid point, but Maurice seemed as shocked as anyone at the news in an interview this morning. Unless I missed something, he was on his way to his kids' school to tell them the news as he didn't want them hearing it from anyone else. Something is just plain goofy here. Although I do agree, it is probably best for him at this time. He was bound to fall on his mistakes for Ferguson's screwups in Toronto.

What a joke of an organization where a playoff spot is the ultimate goal.

Yeah, they didn't make the playoffs in the last two years, but how quickly people forget that they were knocked out of playoff contention on the last day of the regular season in 06-07, so it wasn't like he was a colossal failure or anything. Ultimately, though, I agree with the sentiment that Maurice is better getting out of town. The Leafs are a challenge for any coach, and will be until they learn how to draft well and not to overpay for aging free agents.
