Just because it's Friday and I am looking for any way to screw up the climactic day to your week, let me break it to you that, yes, there is a new provision in the NHL rulebook than bans the twirling of an octopus — or, in its plural forum, octopi — over one's head.

Really, would I jest? This story, uh, has legs to it. It's right there, in black and white blood.

Any slimy act by Red Wings' rink rat Al Sobotka to rev up the crowd in his legendary way will cost Sobotka $10,000 out of his own pocket.

No word what swinging around a grouper or mackerel will set you back, but octopi are a no-no.

Now, we're not suggesting an octopus is actually a fish — I failed Marine Biology 101 — but it hangs out in the water, so I put two and...

LOL crazy. Hope they catch the guy!

And shouldn't it be smelt, and not stinks? Maybe?

The whole thing is so silly it borders on ridiculous. I read today they are worried about pieces of octopus falling on the ice and causing injury. Now I have heard it all.

While I agree that it's pretty bad that the NHL has nothing better to do than to ban someone from swinging an octopus around on the ice, I also wonder why it's so important to swing an octopus around on the ice. I mean isn't that a little weird?

Was someone just sitting around one day and said hey, lets swing an octopus over our heads at the game. And then someone told that guy it was a good idea so now it's reality. Am I the only one that thinks it's stupid and probably not that sanitary? I don't know about anyone else but I definitely wouldn't want to fall on pieces of octopus when I'm playing hockey.

Is the practice silly? Sure it is. But it's tradition. It would be one thing if this was a new thing that Bettman and company was squashing (like the plastic rat thing down in Florida back in '96), but Detroit and octopi have been hand-in-tentacle for over 50 years. Why take this away now? Besides, there have been pre-game playoff rituals that have been far more disturbing than octopus twirling. Anyone remember when the Kings brought out "Lucky Butt" for their Cup run in '93?

Just found an interesting article on the history behind the octopus tossing.
