Southeast division winner may use back door to sneak into NHL playoffs

Watching the gong show that is the race for the top of the Southeast Division, one is left to ponder if the time hasn't come for the NHL to blow up its playoff format.

If the current trend continues, there may be little choice.

With less than two months left in the regular season, it's not a stretch to believe the winner of the Southeast Division could make the playoffs and get the third seed although, in any other scenario outside of a division crown, they would miss the post-season altogether.

Nor is it outside the realm of possibility that the division winner will struggle to hit the .500 barrier.

Nevermind that the SE has produced 2 of the last 3 Stanley Cup champions. Funny how you point out that Atlanta, Washington, and Carolina are each six points out of the Eastern Conference basement, but you do not point out that they are each three points out of the 8-seed and only thirteen points out of the 1-seed. When are you folks in the Great White North going to finally realize that real hockey is played in the SE Division? What's it going to take? We may not post the highest point totals but our brand of hockey is no less impressive than that up north. There are as many, if not more, stars in the SE than any other division (Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Hossa, Lecavalier, St. Louis, Staal). Give us some credit down here, eh!

yeah right. that whole division is a joke. who cares about two of the past three cups? the article is about here and now and right now the southeast is the worst divison in hockey bar none. do you hear tampa bay fans saying how great their team is right now? of course not, and they won the cup a few years ago. to give anyone in this division any third seed is a farce.

The good news is whoever wins the SE will get knocked out in the first round. Ever cloud has a silver lining.
