When an email from OHL media relations director Aaron Bell arrived in my inbox Monday afternoon, only part of the subject line was visible.

Curiously, I tried to make sense of it.

"Windsor Spitfires Regretfully Announce The Passing Of Team Capt..."

Surely, as much as it seemed like common sense at the time, that next word wasn't "Captain", was it? There's just no way.

Sadly, I was wrong. Those were indeed the missing letters.

In a story that transcends anything to do with the game, Windsor Spitfires' captain Mickey Renaud collapsed at his home and died Monday.

At 19 years of age.

For a moment, forget the hockey player, one who seemed destined to eventually make the jump to the Calgary Flames, the team that drafted him last summer.

This tragedy is more than that, hockey be damned.

Sad story. Had a chance to see the kid play, and he was a real leader. But youre right, hockey doesn't matter. Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Wow, thats tough to take. I too wish the Renaud family nothing but prayers and thoughts. Hockey doesn't seem to matter when a 19 year old dies so suddently.

Saw the tribute night to him on youtube (thanks SP!) and bawled my way through it all. Not a dry eye in the arena that night. I lost it when they did the ceremonial opening faceoff between the two captains, and only the Belleville captain came to center ice.

Classy, classy tribute and absolutely stunning to see the level of cooperation and fellowship from the Spitfires' opponent that night, the Belleville Bulls. i don't think I've ever been so moved by a hockey related ceremony in my life.
