We've all heard about - how do we say this diplomatically? - corrupt officiating in international hockey circles and North American hockey fans had a bird's-eye-view of it Sunday at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

All right, no sense tiptoeing around the issue. If the video goal judge that allowed Finland's first "goal" wasn't on the take, he should seriously look for another line of work, because reviewing tape is not his calling.

"The guy upstairs - I'm not sure who it is - he's got some major problems with his eye (sight). He should see a doctor," said U.S. coach John Tortorella. "I've heard about these horror shows with international refereeing. I finally lived through one."

I ever tell you how much I love John Tortorella? No matter where he is, Torts can always be counted on for a little comic...

That is definitely an interesting call. Makes you wonder if reviewing goals should be an option.

Easy solution: get a committee of goal judges up there from several different countries. One guy shouldn't have that much power or responsibility anyway.

I like that idea a lot but do you think it would make the process an extremely long one? So say they have 3 people who are the goal judges. Each one has to review the multiple camera views and make up their mind. Granted they could watch it at the same time but wouldn't it take a lot longer, and hold up the game for way too long?

Well that's what they do in the NHL already... there's a group of all-powerful men in the "war room in Toronto" that reviews every single goal. They take some time sometimes but they rarely get it wrong and there's never been a suggestion of corruption or anything.
