A crazy idea here. My school had an ice hockey team at some point in history(think it was the 80's), but now we don't. Now me and few friends are trying to get it back. How many people are we going to need? What is the usual cost for equipment and ice time for the season? How do you cover that cost? Just looking for few answers.

Your first trip should be to your school's administration to see if it's possible to start a team. They may not allow it. If the school doesn't sanction it then you really can't go any further. Ask them why there isn't a team anymore, find out what you need to, to start it.
Next you need someone who is willing to coach. If you don't have a coach then you really can't go any further.
You'll also need to check out your local schools to see if they have a team...you can't play if you have no opponents.
If your school says yes to a team they might have money in the budget to cover ice time, but equipment is usually the responsibility of the team members. However, I doubt there will be any amount of money to cover anything. Usually each team member has to pay a certain amount of money at the beginning of the season which covers ice time, buses, refs, etc. A very common way to pay for things is to do fund raisers, whether that's a car wash or going door to door selling stuff.
One really important thing you'll need is teammates. You'll need at least 2 or 3 lines worth of team members. You could try to make it work with less but I don't recommend. Also, if you have a lot of people who want to play it is harder for your school to say no.
I'm sure there is a lot more to consider but hopefully that gets you started!

Well heres the situation: 1. Our athletic adminstrator says that we can have a team since it it is a state sanctioned sport. And the reason the old team is gone is because no one took up interest after that class graduated. 2. We also have a few people who would be willing to coach. Were holding a meeting soon, too. The main problem is cost. Our administrator says it will cost around 5000 dollars for ice time for the season. How much is "a certain amount of money" that memebers are supposed to pay?(average)

I'm assuming this is highschool hockey...?
If so, cost depends on a few things. But here's a bit of a run down for you:
If ice time is $5000 and you have 20 players on your team that would be $250 per player. I've asked around and that number is both reasonable and pretty common. For Canada anyway. Often school teams will do fundraisers for those players who can't afford the full amount.
I'm also assuming your school has the uniforms. If not that is a whole other "hockey game". I wouldn't even know where to begin on quoting you for the cost of uniforms as there are too many different options.
Hope this helps!

Hey Kathleen, as always when you're a girl trying to break in to a "boys club" it can be hard. But all you can do is try your best and hope that whoever is choosing the teams sees that. You shouldn't be rejected because of your gender. But if you have any concerns you could always talk to someone in administration at your school.
As for locker rooms, there should be one for girls so I don't think you have anything to worry about in that department.
A good person to speak to would be Sami Jo Small who writes for us and is an Olympic women's hockey player. If you click here, the link will take you to her about us page where you can find her email. She would be a great resource for you to ask advice.
Hope that helps, and good luck!

We had a similar situation at my high school... it took us 3 years of lobbying, petitioning and rallying for support, but our school eventually gave in and had a team. A couple of the teachers coached and we had plenty of quality players and were competitive. I think it ended up costing around $300 each and the school covered the cost of the jerseys, which were probably around $30-35 each. The only catch was that by the time the school gave in, I was off to university! At least my little brother got to play though...

Talked to our athletic director today. She's spoken with surrounding schools about their ice hockey programs. Theirs usually cost $15,000 annualy(with ice time, transportation, and officials). She said to start looking for sponsors and thinking up some fund raisers. Our school doesn't have much income for athletics(that's public school for you). We're basically on our own here.

Wow, that is a lot of money to raise! The school can't help out at all? Don't they pay for some of the other sports?
Sometimes you'll find that local "mom and pop" type stores will give you money if you have their logo on your uniforms. That would help out a lot.
