Hey Kathleen, the best way to learn how to skate is practice. Sometimes the best way is to go with a friend who knows how to skate and just skate around the rink together.

the only way to get better at something is to practice.
also, you could try to find a hockey camp that is specifically for skating.

Here you go! First, get yourself along the boards. Then what I want you to do is just do simple marching steps. Don't take too big of steps, just like walking. This marching step will turn into a stride.

Ok, so what's a stride? Hockey skating is quite simple. It's just a matter of shifting weight and balance from side to side.

If you are stand still, place your feet so that your heels are touching and your toes are out like you are making the letter "V".

Then, place the weight balance on the left leg and push with the ball of your toes with the right skate.

Ok, so what's the ball of your toes? That is where the knuckles of the toes meet the main part of your foot. This is the area you want to concentrate on.

Once you have make the first push, bring that push leg back and shift weight to the right leg and push with the ball of your toes on the left skate. Now you are on your way.

Next lesson....stopping!

It's just that simple.
